We are Family!!! At Genesis, we believe that every member of the body serves a vital part to a properly functioning entity. As Genesis grows larger, we must grow smaller to maintain connection with others in the fellowship of believers at Genesis. The Koinonia Fellowship Teams are small groups that encourage intimacy within our congregation. God did not create us to be alone. Participation in a Koinonia Team is a great way to get to know other and to learn about and share our Christian walks together. There's nothing like a group for committed fellowship, Bible study, prayer, service, and accountability to help one grow in their daily journey with Jesus Christ. Join a team today!

Dr. Ellington W. Porter - Dr. Ellington Porter

Dr. Ellington W. Porter, Sr.

Rev. Ellington W. Porter, affectionately known by his congregation as Pastor E, is one of the dynamic duos Pastoral dream team at the Genesis Church. Known for his energetic, humorous, yet reality based style of preaching, Pastor E. W. Porter has touched thousands of lives through his ministry.

Born on August 17, 1973, this native Minnesotan learned at an early age that he had an unusual gift of leadership with his peers as well as his elders. At the age of 5, the young E. Porter accepted the call of Christ in his life, and became a young leader of the church as a Junior Deacon under the leadership of his father and Pastor Dr. Robert Porter.

As Rev. E. Porter began to grow older in age and spirit, more responsibility was added to his roster. At the age of eleven Ellington began to study piano, and at thirteen he taught himself how to play the Organ. This was the beginning of what would soon become a gifted ministry of music. Meanwhile, at the age of twelve the young E. Porter along with his brother Tecoy Porter age fifteen (now known as the Porter Brothers) began team ministry. Their father and Pastor appointed them Minister of Music and Lead Musician over all choirs of the Shiloh Baptist Church in St. Paul Minnesota. This indeed was a challenge for these teenage young men, to lead a group of their peers, as well as a group of their elders. But with God's favor, they would meet the challenge with great success.

Pastor E, while in Minnesota completed his elementary, Jr. high, and first year of High School in the St. Paul School District. He and his family later in the year of 1988 relocated to Sacramento, California where hid Graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1991. Rev. Porter has also completed studies in the area of Music at Sacramento City College, and has attended the California State University of Sacramento where he studied vocal Music. Pastor E. W. Porter has also attained an Associates in Music Ministry, Associates in Biblical Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Ministerial Studies from the Trinity Life Bible College of Sacramento, California. In 2004 Both Pastor E and Pastor T were commemorated for their Christian leadership by the St. Thomas Christian College and Seminary as they honored them with Doctorate of Divinity Degrees.

After relocating to California, Pastor Ellington continued to be a great support to his Father in his ministry. In 1990 the Lord led Dr. Robert Porter along with 200 members to establish the Genesis Missionary Baptist Church. It is here that the young E. Porter worked closely with his father as an ordained Deacon, lead musician, Sunday school teacher, and Elementary school administrator.

Musically, Rev. Ellington's gifts began to expand into areas of songwriting & record production. In the early 1990's the Lord afforded the ministry team of Tecoy and Ellington Porter to become official with the start of Markee-Wes Production Company. Along with the administrative savvy of Rev. Tecoy' s wife Karlette, this company became the premier academy that featured training in piano, organ, voice, and percussion. They also have produced several recordings in the Northern California Area.

In the fall of 1997, the Lord called Ellington Porter into the preaching ministry. With his acknowledgement and successful preaching of his trial sermon "I Saw The Light", Pastor Ellington was licensed and later ordained by his Father Dr. R. Porter.

It was at the close of 1997 when Rev. E. Porter found his missing rib, in the likeness of a southern belle beauty named Tiwana B. Davis. This wonderfully spirited song bird also knew that God had finally brought her together with her missing body, so on May 29, 1999 the two became one in holy matrimony. From this union they have been blessed with a son Ellington Robert Porter, Jr. who was born August 21, 2005.

It was in that same year of 1999 that Dr. Robert Porter the founder and pastor of Genesis took terminally ill, but with his visionary foresight he prepared the congregation by installing his two young sons (Pastor E & Pastor T) as his assistant Co-Pastors.

Following the death of Dr. Robert Porter in August of 1999, the young Co-Pastors were honored to accept the call to serve as the Sr. Pastors of the Genesis Missionary Baptist Church.

Since that time the Lord has allowed the ministry to continue to move forward in the spirit that it was birthed.

Dear Genesis Family,

In 2001, the Lord placed the Living Vision of constructing the Dr. Robert Porter Center in our hearts. On Sunday, October 26, 2003, after much faith, prayer, commitment and sacrifice we celebrated the manifestation of this vision into a reality with the world renowned Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. That morning he spoke these words:

"Today with so much pain and frustration in the land, so much chaos in California, so much downsizing of jobs, so much foolishness and fear, loss of homes… to build this place, an oasis is the desert…they said it could not be done. But it is being done!"

"This is not luck.

This is a blessing.

This is not accident.

This is providence.

This is the will of God!"

- The Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr.

Grand Opening of the Dr. Robert Porter Center

The Genesis Church, Sacramento, CA

As promised, the Genesis Church has used the Dr. Robert Porter Center to extend our outreach efforts within the Sacramento area and continues to be a religious beacon and inspirational leader throughout the Nation.

As we move forward in 2008, we recognize the need for Genesis to increase as a symbol of hope, empowerment and prosperity. To accomplish this our leadership has agreed to engage in a capital campaign for the next 3 years with the aim to significantly reduce our debt and increase our finances for future ministry.

Our campaign leadership team has been put together. However, many of you will be asked to volunteer your time and services during the campaign to make phone calls, address letters, greet people and to just add that special personal touch. We know that we can't do this without YOU!!

Each of us will have a role to play in the success of this campaign. Our prayer is that you will be open to learning how YOU can participate in supporting this effort to -

INCREASE! BY FAITH, FOR OUR FAMILY, FOR OUR FUTURE!

To Increase!

Sacramento Prepratory (SAC Prep) is a charter school - a tuition-free public school - open to all students. As our name and mission suggests, our curriculum will be college preparatory. Our first class of 5th graders began their journey on July 30, 2003. We will grow one grade per year for four years until we are full scale 5-8 middle-school of about 300 students.

SAC Prep will focus on results through a commitment to quality instruction, high student achievement, and the development of student life skills. Our measure of success will not only be how many students gain admittance to college and graduate but also what kind of people they turn out to be.

SAC Prep is now located on the Genesis Campus.

Visit the schools website for more information about enrolling.

Dr. Tecoy M. Porter Sr. - Dr. Tecoy Porter

When people first meet Dr. Tecoy Markee Porter Sr., a.k.a. Pastor T, they are usually left with the impression that he is a soft-spoken man who is reserved and laid back - and he usually is - until it's time for church. Church time is show time for this Midwesterner who was born in Kansas City, KS and raised in St. Paul. MN. Tecoy's passion for the Lord shows through by the incredible amount of energy that he puts forth in all that he does during the worship service whether it is in his preaching, teaching, singing, or directing. Tecoy attributes his zeal to his father; the late Dr. Robert Porter and mother, the late Elder Hazel Porter who encouraged him to not only take worshipping God seriously, but let him know that he could have fun in worshipping the Lord as well.

Tecoy insists that he was born on the back pew in the sanctuary of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of St. Paul, MN where his father pastored for 18 years. The Porter family always attended and was heavily involved in church. "We went to church so much while growing up that we ended up needing to have keys to the church because many times we would go straight from school to church then home" states Tecoy. "But we loved it and doesn't regret one moment of it because it really kept Ellington and I out of the streets and close to God", continues Tecoy. Because of his heavy involvement in the church, Tecoy gave his life to God at an early age and served as a Jr. Deacon, and Youth Leader during his tenure there.

Shiloh was also the place where he discovered and developed his musical abilities that ultimately led him to be appointed by his father as the Minister of Music for the music ministry of the church in his early teens.

In 1988, Tecoy was accepted to the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific (UOP) in Stockton, CA where he continued to excel musically and academically. There he revived the African American Student Union Gospel Choir and traveled extensively through Europe and California with the Conservatory's premier choral group.

In 1990, Tecoy transferred to California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) where he continued to study voice and obtain his Bachelors of Arts in music in 1993. After graduating with his BA, Tecoy continued going to college earning his Master's in Business Administration Degree at the age of 25 at CSUS as well. All during this time, Tecoy stayed heavily involved in the churches that his father pastored as a Jr. Deacon, Youth Leader and as a musician/director in their Music Ministries.

In 1995, Tecoy co-produced the Genesis Choir's first album, "Be Ready - He's Coming back along with his brother and father. During this time, Tecoy also started Markee Wes Productions, a Christian Music and Entertainment company along with his wife Karlette, and brother Rev. Ellington Porter. Under their production company, they have produced and release 2 more albums featuring the Genesis Choir (1998) and the Genesis Youth Explosion Choir (2001).

In 1996, Tecoy became ordained as a Deacon at the Genesis Baptist Church under the leadership of his father. In 1998, Tecoy gave up his fight with the Lord and accepted the call to preach God's word. On May 24, 1998 he was licensed as a minister of the gospel upon the successful delivery of his trial sermon, "Let It Go". Approximately one year later (May 1999) Tecoy was ordained and appointed as the assistant co-pastor along with his brother, Rev. Ellington Porter, by their father.

In August 1999, the Porter and Genesis families suffered a great loss with the sudden passing of their father, founder and pastor, Dr. Robert Porter. However, due to the foresight of Dr. Porter, Tecoy along with his brother were transitioned into the senior leadership role of the Genesis Baptist Church and were subsequently installed as Pastors in November 14th, 1999. In 2001, Tecoy took a mighty leap of faith and quit a prominent managerial position with the University of California, Davis to pastor the Genesis Church full time.

Genesis has flourished mightily under the leadership of the Porter Brothers with exponential growth spiritually and physically and continues to be highly regarded at both the local and national levels. In 2003 they celebrated the Grand Opening of their 3.5 Million Dollar Family Life Center (named after their father Dr. Robert Porter) with the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. as their special guest. They also established the Dr. Robert Porter Foundation that supports the outreach efforts of the ministry.

Tecoy's personal ministry has also grown in prominence by leaps and bounds. In 2004, he was conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from the St. Thomas Christian College in Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Porter continues to be recognized as a powerful speaker, pastor, motivator, musician, mentor and one of Christianity's up and coming leaders within the body of Christ.

Tecoy is happily married to his church sweet heart, Karlette, of 12 years. They have 3 beautiful children, Tecoy Jr., Kamarion, and Kara.

A Church With Heritage - History

Genesis Missionary Baptist Church was born on April 1, 1990. Led by Dr. Robert Porter and Elder Hazel R. Porter, approximately 200 people with a common vision gathered together. These people committed themselves, before God, to form a church built on one principle: the Bible would be their guide in all areas of church life and direction. The following Sunday some 400 people gathered in their first worship service together. Almost immediately God enabled them to acquire the facilities of Trinity Church of the Nazarene.

We experienced immediate growth, which has continued to the present, with approximately 1,500 people in our membership - including many of the charter members. The Porters' commitment to seeing people come to a faith in Christ and take their places in the family of God was unwavering.

It was a sad time but not so much of a struggle when in 1999; Pastor and Founder Robert Porter became ill. He realized that he needed to reset the sails of the ship and prepare for the rough waters ahead. In his typical visionary style, he set into motion his plans for the future of GENSEIS. Through his lovely, gracious and most capable wife, he presented his wish to ordain his sons, Tecoy Porter and Ellington Porter into the ministry so that there would be an adequate number of ordained ministers to carry out the tenants of the gospel. At the same point, he, Rev. Robert Porter, was elevated to the status of "Senior Pastor" with now Rev. Tecoy Porter and Rev. Ellington Porter assisting him as "Co-Pastors".

Without realizing it at the time, this vision and his ultimate decision laid the groundwork for the Porter Brothers, his sons, to eventually becoming the Pastoral Team they are today. The GENESIS congregation accepted this vision as the plan on April 18, 1999.

For reasons known only to God, Dr. Porter was called to his heavenly reward in August of 1999.

Recognizing the pervasive way that he planted his vision in the lives of his two sons, the people of the church called Rev. Tecoy M. Porter and Rev. Ellington W. Porter to become the Co-Pastors of GENESIS on November 14, 1999. Their charge was to lead in the continuation of their father's dream. Under their direction, this vision still burns brighter than ever today.

Through it all, in the background, but as a steady force, First Lady Hazel Porter continued to prove herself as a most graceful, elegant and spiritual woman of God. She was ultra sensitive, intelligent, sophisticated and an independent woman who could hold her own next to anyone. But she was also the quintessential "Pastor's Wife". To her, Robert was always "Pastor". She referred to him as Pastor in the most loving, supportive and respectful way possible. When she said "Pastors" you knew it meant something. Instinct says that they probably did not always agree on every matter, not every day. But, there was an understanding that when "Pastor" had decided something, the issue was settled. Her love and devotion from him was so obvious the pervasive that there was no question about it.

The Lord saw fit to take Mother Hazel Porter on to Glory on March 22, 2005. But she left behind many touched and gratified people. She had taught entrepreneurial skills to so many. And she'd shared her life with the Lord through her writing of many plays that have been acted out on stage and prose, which have been published. Most important, she shared willingly, freely, and abundantly, to encourage, to inspire and to assist not only her children, Pastor Tecoy and Ellington, but anyone who would listen.

Pastor Robert and First Lady Hazel are still greatly missed today by those who knew them.

Genesis has become a religious beacon and inspirational leader in the community with its progressive approach to spreading the word of the gospel through dynamic teaching, educational training and musical ministries.

Genesis is committed to continuing outreach efforts within the Sacramento area and throughout the United States; and ongoing collaborations with religious and community leaders as well as City officials to empower the Christian community through advocacy and education.

Genesis' mission for the new millennium is to bring unsaved people to the knowledge of Christ and into membership of our church family, lead them to Christian maturity, equip them for their ministry in the church and their life mission in the community.
